Fifty-minute ride from Pemba Airport. Mequfi is a wave spot.
The particular formation of the reef and a mangrove cheek (becoming a little river during the rainy season) have created this very unique spot. During any season, no matter how small the swell, there are always waves in Mequfi. This is the preferred spot of the local wave surfers' community.
One kilometer of beach, slowly disappearing into the deep ocean with a reef on the left and a sand bank on the right, create waves on the left and right corners. No matter what is the wind condition and direction, you will have always a chance to have wave riding sessions here.
The wide beach is a good spot to learn. Kitesurf Universe school, hosted by the Mecufi Diamonds resort, offers top-level services for kitesurf and windsurf, with a school and gear rental for both. At high tide, as the mangrove creek transforms into a perfect enclosed Kite Park, little groups of two riders can enjoy this breathtaking experience at the same time. The spot is also equipped with a rescue boat while the resort offers a great variety of other watersports.
Hazards are well-marked, including left waves by the reef (the wave rides away from it in any case) and some currents, related to high and low tide. The Kitesurf Universe staff, always working at the school, provide the full range of information necessary to ride safely. It is advisable to pack a pair of booties (not indispensable).
The best season is the South Easter trade season (Cusi), Mid April to the end of September. It is characterized by constant winds ranging from 16 to 24 knots almost daily. The North Easter trade (Casi Casi), blowing in November and December, averages 20 knots. The water temperature ranges from a minimum of 24 °C to a maximum of 34°C, so a wet suit is not a priority when packing the gear. Rainy months are January, February and March.
Thirty km of beach, facing a shallow lagoon, protected from the reef three km away, big tide excursions. This is the recipe for a very easy and versatile spot. With the changing tide, the spot goes from super flat, to flat, to chop with several sand banks, creating little islands within the turquoise lagoon, while deeper channels create “pools,” offering an amazing low tide riding experience with a sandy bottom. The combination of these factors creates the perfect playground for kitesurfers of all levels.
While this is an ideal spot to learn the sport, advanced kitesurfers will find the right conditions to improve their skills, and the pros can enjoy every day of perfect conditions to train in completely flat water. During high tide, wave lovers have a 20 km-long reef to ride perfect waves.
Il Pirata lodge is located in the centre of the Murrebue beach, which has always been the most popular spot in northern Mozambique - for a good reason, you can find locals and expats hanging out here.
Il Pirata offers the best base with its safe parking, delicious Italian restaurant and shower on the beach.
Kitesurf Universe, which runs the kite school, offers the highest level of instruction and service to beginners willing to learn as well as visiting experienced kitesurfers.
There are very few hazards on the beach, and the bottom is mostly sandy, however, it is essential to follow the instructions of the kite school staff to have the best and safest riding experience the spot can offer.
Full moon night rides are a must when you are in Murrebue.
